We change reading books every Monday and Friday. Monday’s the children choose a levelled book and on Friday’s they choose a levelled book along with a free reader book of their choice. In order to use our library-style system, we need children to bring back their signed Reading Record and the book they have read in order to exchange it for a new book. It is incredibly important that your child is reading regularly and discussing the text that they have read. Please ensure Reading Records are in school every day as the children are read with at school and will have this signed for in their books.

PE days - Please ensure your child has their PE kit ready when they have PE.

English

We are bringing in a new English curriculum. It covers reading, writing and spelling. We will have 5 CUSP lessons a week, some of these will be reading and some will be writing (normally 3/2 then swap round the following week. 3 times a week we will start our CUSP lessons with a short spelling lesson. We will be covering a range of topics from poetry to character descriptions, learning and securing our writing skills and techniques.

Maths

In our first half term we will be learning all about place value and how to add and subtract. During our place value topic we will be covering a lot of skills; for example, how to partition numbers how to use pace value charts and writing numbers as words up to 100. After that, In addition and subtraction we will look at adding and subtracting one and two digit numbers away from each other, using symbols to compare numbers and looking at how we can solve missing number word problems.

IPC

We will be starting our new topic soon! After Brainwave we start our bigger topic called From A to B, which is focused all about transport. This topic will cover lessons in history, geography, PSHE, science and even allow the children to complete a DT project.

PSHE

In Science and PSHE, we will be thinking about our brain and how it helps us to learn. We will explore the best ways for us to learn and how to prepare for big challenges. We will also think about how to record our learning and how we’re getting on.

Year 2 Curricular Targets

In Year 2, your child will be working towards the band 2 targets below.  They should continue to consolidate their knowledge from Year 1 (band 1) too.
